US Soccer Grassroots Referee Course
Step by Step Instructions
for New Grassroots Referee Training
Step 1 - Be at least 13 years old
US Soccer requires all new referees to have celebrated their 13th birthday before being able to register for the training and become a US Soccer Referee.
This is US Soccer policy as of 07/01/2019.
Step 2 - Create an account/Choose an On-The-Field Training Session
New field training sessions are being added on a regular basis. Choose the one you want, create your Colorado Registration account & then you can start the online learning sessions.
Step 3 - Online Training with US Soccer
Online training is 4 to 5 hours.
Most of the online training is in the US Soccer Learning Center. You don't have to do it all at once, but you do have to do all of it before you come out to the fields for in-person training.
Step 4 - SafeSport
Once you have completed the US Soccer course, you must return to the Colorado OMS website to complete your online learning.
If you are over 18 years old, you are required to complete the SafeSport training program. This is a 1 to 2 hour online course so that every referee understands the principles of keeping our playing environment safe for youth players and referees.
If you are under 18 years old, this section will be marked complete
After completing the SafeSport course, you will need to upload the certificate into your member home page in the Colorado OMS system.
Step 5 - Final exam
When you have uploaded your SafeSport certificate, you then need to take the final exam in the Colorado OMS system.
Return to ONLINE LESSONS and then take the final test
Step 6 - On The Field Training
Now you are ready to attend the in-person clinic for your ON-THE-FIELD training session.
Once you have completed all these steps, you will be registered as a referee. Assignors will be able to work with you so that you can start officiating games in your area.
